Michael Jackson documentary sets new record
Sony’s Michael Jackson concert pic “This Is It” grossed an estimated $2.2 million in Tuesday night shows at the domestic box office, a record for an October Tuesday.
Studio said Wednesday shows have already surpassed the $2.2 million generated as the film opened around the globe at 9 p.m. Pacific time.
Film is playing in roughly 3,500 theaters domestically and thousands more overseas.
“This Is It,” a compilation of rehearsal footage, opened in 97 countries including the U.S. and Canada. Sony didn’t have an international number as of midday Wednesday, but said the pic was doing equally well overseas.
Film has drawn largely positive reviews.
Sony will release Wednesday box office numbers on Thursday morning.
Sony paid $60 million to concert promoter AEG Entertainment for distribution rights to the film.
