When I started rapping, the highest honor a real MC could aspire to was the coveted 5 mics from Source Magazine. It was only given to the best of the best in hip hop, the cream of the crop so to speak. Those that received the honor were sometimes but not always contested, but what WAS always contested were those that DIDN’t receive the honor. If you’ve ever argued about your favorite MC on a corner, in a barbershop or on the comment section of a blog, then you know what I’m talking about….

…For every album labeled a classic, there are dozens of others that people feel deserve the honor. So I realize that people now feel they have to place my album next to others that they feel were more impactful, and argue their case. With social networking being as prevalent as it is in our society, these arguments now take place in a very public arena, which in order to be heard, you often have to be very opinionated and abrasive to stand out. So people, while having no personal hate or malice towards me, will make very loud arguments about The Source’s decision, and the loudest ones will probably get the most attention. Having been in the music industry almost 20 years, I have learned to receive my accolades with honor and respect, and hold my head high when the hate rains down. I love hip hop just as much or even more than the next person, so I understand the passion behind the argument. At the end of the day, we all want this thing we love to be as real and pure as the day we fell in love with it. Having said all this, it is with great honor and admiration that I humbly accept this esteemed declaration from the Source Magazine and it’s staff for my album Trill OG, and for those that feel they need to shit on me to argue for another artist or album, don’t worry. The Trill OG can take it! UGK for life!

Today is a sad day in the music world. One of the great icons, entertainers and music artists of all time has passed. Michael Jackson meant so much to so many people, and everybody has a story they can relate to about the music he created.

Before I ever listened to rap, hip-hop, r&b, I grew up on the radio. I listened to Top 40 and in the 80′s one man ruled the airwaves: Michael Jackson. What he has done for my generation and so many music fans across the world will never go unnoticed. He’s broken and set many Billboard records. He’s sold out thousands of arenas. He’s left us with a lifetime of memories. The voice, the style, the dance moves and imagery all define what Michael Jackson did for popular culture.

As I write this and listen to a catalog of MJ’s many dozen hit songs, I’m reminded of a time period when I was younger and grew up listening to one of my favorite artists of all time. I can safely say, Michael was my favorite singer in my childhood. Years later, his music continues to inspire others and people still talk about the man despite him not being as dominant as he once was. For today’s kids who have no clue who he was, ask your older siblings or your parents or a teacher. They’ll tell you what a legend he was and will forever be.

For all the negative issues he went through in the past 15 years (plastic surgery woes, extortion, child molestation accusations, failed comebacks), Michael Jackson’s legacy will never die. It will continue for generations and generations after. He was a trailblazer, a trend setter, a risk taker, an innovator and a consummate performer. I’ll miss you Michael Jackson. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the soundtrack to different eras of my livelihood.

Check out the 4 Horsemen of hip-hop, each and every one of them brought their own Swag on that stage.  From the way Jay-Z had his blazer locked down on one button, to T.I.’s loose bowtie…to Weezy’s Converse kicks…Kanye’s strut on stage with one hand in his pocket…The fashion was immaculate.  The level of Swag on that stage would have called for a state of emergency from the fashion police.

Of all the 5 performers on stage – only Kanye West aka Mr. Professional on the front and Party on the back was the only one not wearing stunna shades.  Notice how he did not wear sunglasses – a rarity from his own fashion sense, not conforming to the optical dress code and for that, is a fashion element not to go unnoticed.  He even rocked a tuxedo garter belt…Wayne was the only cat to wear a tie – a white one accompanied by a large designer scarf, a Sinatra fedora and a rock star chain in tact.

Who can not forget M.I.A.’s stage presence, who was rumored to give birth on this night and rocked the stage with her own maternal Swag…

Here’s some pix that I found floating around the world wide web, people will be talking about this performance for years.  Even if they never shoot a music video for this track, people will always remember of the night that the World Series of Rap -  Jay, TIP, Kanye, Weezy F. Baby and M.I.A. took center stage and brought down the house on the grandest stage of them all – The Grammy’s.

If you haven’t heard yet,  Joaquin Phoenix has retired from acting last October, making it official at the premiere of his new movie Two Lovers, showing up with the words “GOOD BYE!” on his knuckles.  The reason for his decision?  To pursue a career in music.  We are used to hearing of actors who believe that they have a future in music so I didn’t think much of it at first… UNTIL THIS PAST MONTH!!!

On January 16, the ex-actor showed up at the Las Vegas nightclub Lavo as the evening’s host.  He showed up at the club with a new scruffy beard and a beanie.   The club goers not only got to see Joaquin but were unexpectedly the firsts to see the Oscar winner perform.  What did the actor do? RAPPED, of course!  What did he rap?  It is not not 100% clear due to the fact that he was mainly rhythmically mumbling words into the mic.  Clubbers were in awe while gawking at the former actor.  This choice in career was so out-of-left-field that it seemed like a hoax but sadly he is extremely serious about this.  According to Entertainment Weekly, the actor claims that Diddy will help produce his upcoming debut album yet Diddy’s rep had no comment to give them.

Upset with Facebook

Long time since i have had a reason to write a blog.. I almost forget. hehe. okay, so i love myspace, because it is secure, and the people at myspace don’t disable your account because they think that you are a fake you. having said that brings me to the subject of my blog… facebook allows a lot of posers, i thought maybe they would figure out that the posers of me, (and i am sure others on facebook) were in fact posers by looking into their accounts, or sending emails to the people that they believed to be “posers” which ask questions. what those questions may be.. i don’t know. which is why i don’t run an interactive web site. on that note, this is what happened to me earlier today… i signed onto facebook with my new password because someone keeps hacking into my account, and when i typed my password and “log in” name in, a red sentence came up saying..

wow! i was in shock. i clicked on the link that they told me to click on and then to another link that said: my account may of been disabled by mistake. once i got to that it gave a note saying why it was disabled which stated the note saying that it was disabled because they believe that i was a fake of myself. genius. here i am loving facebook (as well as myspace-hehe) but going on facebook to talk to some of my friends and they are thinking that I AM THE “FAKE” OF MYSELF!!! hahahahahaha.. at first i laughed, and then i got angry. angry because, with ALL the people that PRETEND to be me on facebook, they decide to say I AM THE FAKE- of myself. all i can think is, WHO is running this site? and how can they just “disable” my account without first, sending me a warning notice, or AT LEAST asking me some account verification questions. here they are re-designing the look on the site when they should be setting up a more secure way of allowing people to set up an account. i wasn’t even under my name, i had a fake name on my account because, obviously i didn’t want everyone on facebook to know it was me.

maybe i am just venting, but i am also writing this blog in hopes that the people at facebook will un-disable my account and allow me to sign in the EXACT same way it was, same friends, same emails, same “pets” and so on..

phew! i’m glad i got that off my chest, i needed to let it out somewhere, and myspace has always been the best place for me to do it, especially if i hope for something to change….

Thursday morning (11/20) Geoges St. Pierre was in Hawaii alongside hometown boy B.J. Penn to promote their upcoming UFC 94 main event fight, which takes place on Saturday, January 31, 2009.  A local radio station jock initiated GSP into Hawaiian culture with manupua, a pork filled bun – but after he took a bite, the host claimed it was cat!  It was a nice rib that got everyone laughing in the studio.  To read about GSP’s long week media blitz from Las Vegas to Toronto to Hawaii and back to his native Montreal, click HERRE to check it out.

Chris Jericho won back the World Heavyweight Title last night in a hard fought battle with Batista to take the crown for the second time in his career (3 if you count his WCW World Heavyweight Title win in December 2001, the night he unified the titles).  If you watched this bout, there were times where Jericho could have just slid through the door and onto the mat…which means although the match was good, there were a few sloppy parts in it.  But that’s not to take away from a great main event match.  Some thought Jericho’s championship run was premature and now he has the gold once again….But if you think of it, is he just another transitional champion in the waiting? Look who’s coming back (look at the image below).

John Cena returns from injury and out of nowhere becomes #1 contender to fight Jericho at Survivor Series. Let’s back pedal for a minute here…And let’s not insult the intelligentsia of people who watch this pre-determined business.  WWE uses a storyline from SummerSlam in which Batista destroys Cena to put him out on the shelf.  OK, that’s fine, Cena really takes time off due to injury.  But that match with Batista was a big money making match and was not promoted properly (even both participants in the match off camera have admitted to it).  So what do Freddie Prinze Jr. and the rest of Stephanie McMahon-Levesque’s writers do? They book Cena at Survivor Series when in fact it was Cena who jobbed cleanly to Batista in the first place at SummerSlam. So what the heck am I rambling at here?  Batista should be continuing his program with Jericho.  It now looks to be out of the equation. 

The truth is this: John Cena is going to steamroll over Chris Jericho to take the belt back and set up a feud down the road with Batista. Soooo this means, had Batista won the steel cage championship match, he would have to fight John Cena and defend the belt – and the WWE brass are currently waiting for this type of real money making storyline for WrestleMania 25.  If WWE books in this fashion that I have just layed out, I hope they stretch out this Jericho/Cena storyline, as their 2005 rivalry played out real well that Summer.  I would rather like to see Y2J hold the belt until Royal Rumble and let Cena take it then, while Batista wins the ’09 Rumble to set up the big main event for WM 25…
