JEWLELRY: Check out the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2009 NBA Championship Ring

October 28th, 2009 | By Rick From Chicago | 481 views

The gold is of limited edition 15 karat variety to represent the 15th championship earned by the organization.

Per the request of Dr. Buss, there are 14 diamonds surrounding the top of the ring symbolizing the previous 14 franchise championships, with the Larry O’Brien trophy in the middle to represent the 2008-09 title.

On the inside of a Player ring rests an etching of their respective jersey number. In addition, as requested by Fisher and Bryant, there is a player image on the side of player rings.

The Los Angeles skyline is an element unique to non-player rings in place of the player’s image.

The ring is two toned, with white gold representing the Lakers Sunday whites uniforms that honor legendary broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Each ring is authenticated by a serial number, and to further protect the authenticity, there are hidden etchings of the Lakers logo.

Kupchak contributed the idea to include the varying records of every individual playoff series on the side of the ring, which was done in addition to having the season record to capture the journey of the entire season.

  • According to the designer, Balfour, the 2008 World Championship rings are made of 14-karat white gold. They’re reportedly worth about $30,000 each.
  • Here are more details, courtesy of Balfour:
  • Overall, the ring contains a combination of 92 diamonds and emeralds for a total weight of nearly 9cts of gemstones.
  • The top of the ring features a genuine emerald shamrock, which was created with three custom-cut 8mm heart-shaped emeralds and three custom-cut baguette emeralds on the stem.
  • The shamrock is surrounded by 64 pave set diamonds.
  • The bezel is set with 20 princess cut diamonds and there is a 0.10ct diamond in the Larry O’Brien Trophy on the shank of the ring.
  • The ring features “Banner 17″ on one shank, to commemorate the Celtics 17th NBA Championship.
  • The word “Ubuntu,” the team’s mantra during the 2007-2008 season, is on the other shank. Doc Rivers initiated the saying by borrowing the African word (pronounced Ooh-BOON-too). It roughly means “I am, because we are” in English.
  • The backgrounds of each shank mimic the team’s iconic parquet floor.
  • Team patriarch Red Auerbach’s signature is engraved on the inside of the ring.
  • Each player has his name and number, as well as the team’s record, 66-16, included on their ring.

SOHH is reporting that Atlantic Records artist Plies, will have a very strong debut week for his sophomore album, Definition of Real.  Early reports say the Fort Myers, Florida rapper is on course to sell anywhere from 150-250,000 units of his new LP.

This is great news considering Lil’ Wayne pushed back his release of Tha Carter III from May 13 to June 10 – the same week as Plies’ release.  Wayne is a confirmed lock to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 next week after first day sales of 423,000 copies sold.

Plies’ new album has some stellar production behind the project worth checking out on top of the guest appearances from Trey Songz, J. Holiday, The-Dream, Jamie Foxx and Keyshia Cole.
