New York Yankees superstar Derek Jeter has been honored by watch brand Movado, who will introduce a series of special Series 800 chronographs.  The introduction of the new Movado Series 800 Derek Jeter chronographs was made at a special event on September 16, 2008 at the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City.  Jeter himself contributed significant input into the development of these timepieces, working closely with the Movado design team.  Movado, for its part, will contribute $100,000 to Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation, an organization committed to helping young people turn away from drugs and alcohol, and embrace healthy lifestyles and academic excellence.

“Movado is very proud of our association with Derek Jeter,” stated Jeff Cohen, President of Movado Worldwide.  “He is one of the most renowned baseball players in Major League Baseball, and he embodies everything that Movado Series 800 stands for – timing, innovation and a commitment to excellence.”

The most exclusive timepiece in the group is the Limited Edition Movado Series 800 Derek Jeter Chronograph in 18K rose gold. Restricted to a series of 10 pieces worldwide, this self-winding watch presents a 47mm case with sapphire crystals on both sides, a black dial with silver subdials and rose gold-colored accents, and an alligator strap with a rose gold deployant buckle.  Jeter’s name and team number decorate the edge of the caseback, and the 18K central winding mass also bears the player’s number.

The timepiece is water resistant to 200 meters, and is accompanied by a custom watch-winder box and a special certificate.  Retail price is set at $25,000.  Also available is a version in black PVD-finished “Performance Steel” and 18K rose gold.  Sharing the same movement, functionality, and water resistance as its sibling, this Movado Series 800 Chronograph showcases a black stripe-patterned dial, and a black strap in kevlar-reinforced “XtremeResin”.  The caseback and rotor share the commemorative details which present Jeter’s name and team number; on this timepiece, the winding mass is in black PVD, and bears Jeter’s number.   Accompanied by a numbered certificate, this watch carries a retail price of $7,700.

Backes & Strauss

The Backes & Strauss Regent 1609 AD limited edition watch packs a little history into a gorgeous package. The watch is named for the year when English astronomer Thomas Harriett made the first drawings of the moon . To celebrate the event the watch features a moon-phase indicator decorated with a 17-star constellation delineated in diamonds. The waches are produced in collaboration with Geneva’s Franck Muller Watchland, which manufactures the movements and completes assembly. The watch also features a diamond set in the crown as well as on the bezel and lugs.

The Regent 1609 AD is currently on display in the Harrods Fine Jewellery and Watch Room opposite the de Beers boutique, until it is officially launched in October 2008. This is the first limited edition watch from Backes & Strauss and it is limited to 219 pieces (in two sizes) and available in different diamond combinations (from £17,000 = $34,000 US).
